Well it was donationware for several years. Now he's quiet about
it other than being kinda rude. but whatever.

I suppose he could have done that, but he was giving away free keys to anyone that emailed for over a decade. He could have easily made a one-time catch-all "My BBS" registration with all of the keys, and just send it out in a zip file.
