I suspect I'd have to do something like packet over hf or something
    since vhf is short range.

    There are digipeaters!

Packet BBSes are usually a bit different from 'dialup' BBSes. Usually
just run on a TNC but sometimes on a PC, with very short and minimal
    menus and features.

In general the only packet I've ever done was a connection to a Winlink
node with Pat when I had a Kenwood D74.
I have also done a few broadcasts with a gps update on aprs, but don't
know if they ever made it out.

Awesome. That's at least something! And fun stuff, IMO.

When you do send APRS stuff out, you can check on aprs.fi if anything heard you by searching for your call sign.

Oh yeah, keep in mind I think Winlink nixes your email if you don't use it for a while.
