I recently found I was quickly going through my usenet quota with astraweb.

When I reviewed groups that had a large number of messages I found

#AREA usenet_altcompfreeware alt.comp.freeware a
#AREA usenet_complangc++ comp.lang.c++ a

Both of these were receiving yEnc RAR parts.

I have removed both of these from my incoming feed. c++ makes no sense; but
I guess it is just another form of spam.

Thought I would share in case others may be getting c++ and or freeware
group, and haven't noticed the increase use in bandwidth to pull down
these groups.

I've tried to add some subject filtering; in case it is occurring in other groups. But just removed these two for the time being.

Yeah, on Usenet the binary creeps take over any channel they want so lots of these old channels have been turned into binary dumps. It's sad, Usenet was the goto place for all things, now other than a few niche groups it's mostly garbage.

freeware was a mistake. I had spent a few days
trying to determine which groups were actually active,
but wasn't successful 100%. So I came up with a list
based on activity I found on other usenet statistics.

I would have assumed that freeware would have been
discussions, not binaries as it was not a alt.binaries
group; but it seems people like creating spam and problems
however they can and started posting microsoft products
to the group in yEnc encoded RAR parts. So although
newslink didn't bring in the binary file; it was going
against my download from astra. I bought 25G that everybody
said would last a life time, and I'm < 10G because of these
stupid binary postings in non binary groups.
